Inspired by the poetry of Australian feminist poet Diane Fahey, who turns the classical into allegory, Genesis 3:16 tells the story of “contemporary woman journeying from patriarchy to reclaim her own space and authenticity”. Subversive responses to various themes and situations expose the violence hidden in the myth of the hero. Women, who, justified by mythological reference, have been objectified throughout centuries, are given the chance to appropriate their own bodies and to let their voice be heard.

Project description

Genesis 3:16 is part of a series of several recent pieces which deal with the theme of the relationships between the gender: Echo Room (2009), Nuit Ecran (2007), Lovely User (created for the Monik Festival, Odyssud, Blagnac, 2005).

Inspired by Greek mythological figures such as the Sirens, Andromeda and Ariadne, this piece stages two opposing visions. The first the “classical” one as carried by ancient mythological writings, the second resists this vision and gives “voice” to the vision of the character herself.

With music, text and movement the performers embody these two visions to give the audience an entertaining interpretation of the tensions between them.

CorpusMedia 2009 in Toulouse, Midi-Pyrénées.

On the crossed theme of « live performance/multimedia/digital arts », a « CorpusMedia » event is organized in Toulouse, Décembre 3, 4 and 5, 2009.

As part of this euro regional platform artists-inventors coming from the three regions/countries (Midi-Pyrénées, Languedoc-Roussillon, Catalonia) are invited to present a variety of projects.

Instead of full evening long pieces we favour multi faceted projects like: short performances, site specific mini performances, works in progress, lecture demonstrations, installations, presentations of interactive tools, workshops, etc.

The main space dedicated to the event is the « Espace MixArts-Myris », Toulouse, a large old industrial space which can be arranged in multiple separate spaces.

The City of Villeneuve-Tolosane, close to Toulouse (Marcel Pagnol theatre equipped with light and sound) will also accommodate presentations.

The spirit of the event is geared towards artists-artists and artists-audiences meetings aiming at offering, during 3 days and in a relaxed atmosphere, a time/space dedicated to the sharing of knowledge and ideas, exchanging technical solutions, analysing the artistic and technological implications, showing one’s work, confronting it to other people’s work, demystifying with a wide audience the use of interactive digital technology as applied to live performance/image/music.

The first two days are dedicated to artists-artists meetings and the third day to the artists-audience meeting.

The mixed workshops that the K. Dance company proposes put forward simultaneously creative research on the tools of choreography in contemporary dance (tools of composition, dance / theater, expressiveness through the body in the broad sense, integrated with technological means), and the handling and adaptation of digital tools (multimedia, interactive devices, software, etc.) as applied to artistic production, in particular in the field of live performance.

They are adapted for both dancers and non dancers.

A final public presentation can be offered as a live performance or a screening in a particular space and time depending on the context of the accommodating structure.

Six different types of workshops are proposed: each one develops its own approach.

Workshop 6: Body practise and telematics. E-Web

This workshop develops a danced dialogue between two (or more) distant teams through the use of a live broadcast internet platform.

It is based on the recent experiences performed by the company in between distant cities in France, with Mexico, with India.

The courses taught are the combined results of more than 12 years of teaching.

Anne Holst and Jean-Marc Matos have taught choreographic workshops at the Dance Department of the Paris 8 University, at the Paul Sabatier and the Mirail Universities of Toulouse, given numerous workshops on “dance and image” for professional dancers and non dancers, and experimental “dance and technology” for dancers and non dancers. They have been teaching students of visual art at the National Art School of Cergy-Pontoise (Paris) since 1996, and set up an experimental platform for “on line” dance related projects in 1998.

Their educational modules combine physical preparation, movement improvisation, live dance and video, choreographing with multimedia, and the implication of the body in multimedia art works.  They also give lectures related to the crossed fields of dance and new media.

In the context of these workshops, they propose to work with people with an interest in the bodily implication in multimedia art. The knowledge of a dance technique can be incorporated, but is not essential. Practitioners or students of visual arts, technology design, live performance (theatre, dance, etc), cinema, photography, video, multimedia etc. are equally welcome.  Nevertheless, all participants should be interested in being physically involved.

Production 2009-2010

Interactive dance performance.

Echo Room questions the domination of the other and the structure of relationships between men and women.  The choreography draws on the dialectics

of the body which is inherited and socially constructed on the one hand, and lived and free to make choices on the other. The uncontrollable is juxtaposed with the controlled and imposes itself like an echo of the past.

Echo Room deals with the simultaneous perception of various states of one given reality embodied in a man-woman relationship through the use of physiological sensors. It questions the relationship between movement, physiology and psychological structures through a danced duo to be experienced by the audience in three spaces.  Each space emphasizes either the live dance; the physiological reactions-interactions of the dancers through sound, shape and colour; or the mental space of the dancers through reactive sound and video. This is achieved by treating information collected by sensors attached to the dancers which measure their physiological reactions: muscular tension, breathing, and heartbeat which allows for another real-symbolic-past-future space/time interpretation of the dance that we see unfolding before us.

In the site specific version the audience is invited to circulate in three separate spaces, inside of a given location. In the stage version the audience can experience the three spaces simultaneously either in the house or around the dancers on the stage itself as images and sound are projected on screens suspended on stage and on the walls of the house.

An art-science collaboration between Sharada Srinivasan (Bharata Natyam dancer and Associate Professor, NIAS, Bangalore, India) and the team of K. Danse, France of Jean-Marc Matos and Anne Holst) on the crossed theme: mythology of the body/mythology of stars.

The event, taking place October 17 at the Cité de l’Espace, Toulouse from 2 :30 pm until 5 :00 pm, offers: 1/ a related photo, video and musical exhibition, 2/ an internet-streamed simultaneous east-west dance fusion performance across the venues of Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) (CREST), Hoskote, and Cité De L’Espace, Toulouse by Sharada Srinivasan and Anusha Emrith, 3/ discussions between Indian and French astrophysicists, also in relation to Prof. Sharada Srinivasan’s researches linking the Nataraja imagery to stellar observations and also connections between astronomical traditions in the Orient and West including India and Egypt.
