ENTRE is a participatory ritual in public space that invites all audiences to share a moment of movement, collective action, attention and embodied presence. Through a choreographic dialogue with four dancers, participants are gently guided into a collective experience of gestures and shared energies.
Alongside the physical interaction, each participant receives brief invitations on their smartphone, extending the experience through an intimate and discreet digital layer. Rather than distracting from the live encounter, technology deepens awareness, encouraging new ways of perceiving oneself, others and the surrounding environment. The performance uses the dancing body to also explore young people’s relationship with the digital world.

Artistic concept

ENTRE is a participatory contemporary dance performance that transforms the stage into a shared space of encounter. Rather than separating performers and spectators, it invites audiences of all ages, backgrounds and physical abilities to progressively become active participants in a collective choreographic experience.
The title ENTRE (“between”) refers to the spaces that connect us: between generations, cultures, bodies, identities, memories and imaginations. Through movement, touch, voice, music, and playful interaction, the performance explores how diversity becomes a source of collective creativity.
Professional dancers initiate simple choreographic situations inspired by everyday gestures, cooperation games and embodied listening. These gradually open to audience participation, allowing every participant to contribute according to their own physical possibilities, confidence and desire for engagement. No dance experience is required.
Rather than presenting virtuosity, ENTRE celebrates the richness of human differences and the capacity of dance to create temporary communities.

Inclusion & Diversity

Inclusion is not an additional outreach activity but the core artistic methodology of ENTRE.
The project is designed to reach audiences who are often underrepresented in contemporary dance, including:

  • children and teenagers
  • older adults
  • families
  • people with disabilities
  • newcomers and migrant communities
  • people with little or no previous experience of contemporary dance
  • rural and geographically isolated communities

Participation is based on multiple levels of engagement. Audience members may simply observe, interact from their position, or actively join the performance space, and, if they want, interact at will with their smartphones (invitation messages are sent on audience’s smartphones, via a local network put at disposal for the duration of the performance, with no specific application to be dowloaded). Every form of participation is equally valued.
The choreography intentionally avoids technical complexity and instead relies on universally accessible movement principles:

  • imitation
  • rhythm
  • play
  • cooperation
  • collective attention
  • bodily listening

Because these forms of communication precede language, ENTRE can be experienced across linguistic and cultural boundaries, making it particularly suitable for international touring (in addition, texts sent on the audience’s smartphones are easily translated in any needed language).
Whenever possible, each presentation is accompanied by workshops bringing together local participants before the performance. Their experiences become part of the live event, strengthening local ownership and intercultural dialogue.

Touring as Social Inclusion

Each touring stop becomes a local collaboration rather than a simple presentation.
Partners are encouraged to involve:

  • community dance groups
  • schools
  • social organisations
  • disability organisations
  • cultural centres
  • senior centres
  • refugee and migrant associations

These partnerships create opportunities for people who rarely attend theatres to become active contributors to the artistic experience.
Rather than bringing a finished product to different cities, ENTRE adapts to each local context, allowing communities to shape part of the performance through their own presence and participation.
This approach strengthens social cohesion while creating lasting relationships between cultural institutions and local communities.

Fight Against Climate Change

Although centred on inclusion, ENTRE also proposes an environmentally responsible touring model.
The performance has been conceived from the outset as a low-impact production:

  • lightweight scenography (none)
  • minimal technical requirements (just a table, electricity connection, access to G4)
  • small touring team (4 people)
  • adaptable to theatres, community spaces, schools, outdoor spaces, and non-conventional venues
  • reduced energy consumption (no application to download)
  • reusable and durable materials (open source software)
  • favoring train or boat whenever possible, share-driving with low cost energy car

Its flexibility allows performances to take place close to communities, reducing audience travel while increasing access to culture.
International mobility prioritises train travel whenever geographically feasible, while tour routing is organised to minimise long-distance transport and unnecessary journeys.
Digital tools are used primarily to support collaboration, preparation and knowledge exchange between partners, reducing the need for additional travel while preserving the importance of live encounters.

European Relevance

Across Europe, increasing social fragmentation, demographic change and environmental challenges call for new forms of cultural participation.
ENTRE responds by proposing dance as a shared social practice capable of creating trust between people who might otherwise never meet.
The project demonstrates that inclusion is not simply about widening audiences but about rethinking how artistic experiences are created collectively.
Its adaptable format allows it to travel across diverse European contexts—from urban theatres to rural cultural centres, schools, community venues and public spaces—while maintaining the same artistic quality and participatory philosophy.

Long-term Impact

Beyond each performance, ENTRE leaves behind new methods for inclusive artistic participation that can continue to benefit local partners.
The touring project will strengthen European collaboration by sharing participatory choreographic practices, accessibility strategies and environmentally responsible touring methods among partner organisations.
In doing so, ENTRE contributes to a more inclusive, sustainable and resilient European performing arts ecosystem, where artistic excellence is inseparable from social engagement and ecological responsibility. (performeurope.eu)
